In our last post, we explored some common causes of loneliness and how to identify the signs of loneliness. Check it out here. In this post we’ll discuss some simple strategies to combat loneliness.
Did you know that nearly one in four people worldwide report experiencing loneliness (Gallop-News)? That is more than a billion people worldwide!
If you’re experiencing loneliness here are some simple strategies you can employ to combat loneliness:
- Reach out: Take the initiative to reach out to friends or family members. Send a text, make a call, or schedule a coffee date. Small gestures can go a long way in strengthening relationships and brightening someone’s day. It can also be helpful to open up to loved ones about the loneliness you are experiencing.
- Volunteer: Get involved in your community by volunteering for a cause you are enthusiastic about. Volunteering gives you a chance to meet new people and build connections in your community. You’ll also feel good about giving back to your community.
- Join a Group: Whether it’s a book club, a fitness class, or a hobby group, finding like-minded individuals can lead to meaningful connections and shared experiences. Joining a group allows you to bond over common interests and form new friendships. Groups can be found online (social media apps) and on bulletin boards in local coffee shops, libraries, and other community spaces.
- Get Moving: Movement like walking, yoga, dance, online exercise classes, and more can help combat loneliness. Staying active can help with a lot of the feelings that come with loneliness like depression, anxiety, and stress.
- Find a Therapist: If you’re struggling with barriers that keep you from fully connecting with others, therapy can be a helpful step to explore these life patterns and the emotions you experience.
Combating loneliness doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does take intentionality. Start with these simple steps to beat loneliness.
